Are you ready for the big internet crunch? – CNN.com.
In 18 months time the internet as we know it will no longer be able to grow.
–Daniel Karrenberg, IP address expert
Within 18 months it is estimated that the number of new devices able to connect to the world wide web will plummet as we run out of “IP addresses” — the unique codes that provide access to the internet for everything from PCs to smart phones.
“That doesn’t mean it will cease to function, but entry could be limited to new devices.”
Some estimate that by September 2011 the last large batches of addresses will be issued, meaning that months after that date there will be no new addresses available.
If your beginning to think 2012 THE END IS NEAR! relax, put the foil cap down you don’t need anymore canned goods. Its not that serious, unless if you never ever do your windows updates AND your computer is over 5 years old.
Enter IPv6 basically adding the extra zero’s to the date format (28.05.2010) where the old system IPv4 (28.05.10) would have you guessing which millennia your in.
If all this is going above your head keep this in mind, if your on Win xp sp3, vista, win7 or mac osX and higher your computer is on the safe list. But that old router you found on craigslist for really cheap might need a firmware upgrade or replacement altogether.
Of-course it can be more than just your router that may need to go
but potentially any gadget, device or peripheral that connects to your network or internet and cannot be updated .
